Heartburn does occur once the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) malfunctions enabling food that's already entered the stomach and begun being ingested to get its long ago in to the food tube. That food includes belly chemicals that are now being used in digestion thus the burning feeling that affects the filling of the esophagus.
