Like many sci-fi shows Stargate Atlantis started out on a fantastic assumption that there were literal gates that might permit creatures to instantly go in one world to another, and galaxy to galaxy. The assumption was but successful as a result of previously interplanetary travel that was also involved by successful Stargate franchises.
